Securing Anti-Bird Nets in Orchards with Zigzag Fastener Wire
Installing protective netting over fruit trees requires a fixing method that is strong, durable, and gentle on the netting material. Zigzag wire, a pre-formed galvanized steel wire with a continuous series of alternating bends, serves as a robust mechanical fastener for securing netting to support wires, frames, or directly to itself. Unlike plastic ties that degrade under UV exposure or twine that can rot, properly selected and installed zigzag wire provides a long-lasting, weather-resistant connection that withstands wind load, bird pressure, and seasonal temperature changes.
The principle is straightforward: the zigzag wire is placed over the point where the netting overlaps a support cable or another section of netting. Using a specialized hand or pneumatic tool, the fastener is compressed. This action closes the bends around both the netting and the support, creating a secure, four-point grip that distributes clamping force evenly. This prevents the netting from tearing at the attachment point, a common failure mode with puncturing methods like staples.
Selecting the correct zigzag wire involves balancing gauge, coating, and corrosion resistance with the specific netting material and orchard environment. The wire gauge must be strong enough to resist the tension forces from the netting without being so thick that it damages the netting filaments when compressed. A common choice is a mid-range gauge that offers a firm hold without cutting into the polyethylene or polypropylene netting.
The coating is critical for longevity. For most agricultural applications, a heavy galvanized (zinc) coating is standard. This provides a sacrificial layer that protects the underlying steel from rust, which is essential in the humid, sometimes chemical-exposed environment of an orchard. For coastal regions or areas with high rainfall, considering a zinc-aluminum alloy coated wire can offer enhanced corrosion protection, extending the functional life of the installation for multiple seasons.
Consistent, high-quality connections rely on the right tool and technique. For long orchard rows, pneumatic (air-powered) clipping tools are highly efficient, ensuring every clip is compressed with identical force, which is vital for uniform net tension. For smaller plots or repairs, manual hand clippers provide adequate control. The key to a good joint is positioning: the zigzag wire must be centered directly over the netting and support wire junction before compression.
The compression action should be firm and complete, bringing the tool’s jaws fully together. A properly set clip will be flat and tight, with the netting and support wire held immobile. An under-compressed clip will feel loose and allow slippage, while over-compression can shear the netting strands or deform the support wire. It’s advisable to practice on scrap materials to adjust the tool’s pressure or the operator’s technique before beginning the main installation.
Anti-bird nets are under constant tension from their own weight and wind action. The zigzag clips must secure the netting without creating high-stress concentration points. During installation, the netting should be pulled taut but not over-stretched before clipping. Clips should be placed at regular intervals—typically every 20 to 30 centimeters along support cables—to distribute the load evenly across the netting’s edge or seam.
After a section is installed, a thorough inspection is necessary. Gently pull on the netting near each clip to check for movement. Visually inspect each clip to ensure it is fully closed and sitting square on the wires. Pay special attention to end points and corners, where tension is highest. Any clip that spins easily, appears crooked, or has sharp protruding ends should be removed and replaced immediately to prevent a localized failure that could unravel a larger section.
A significant advantage of zigzag wire fasteners is their reusability. At the end of the season, the same clipping tool can be used in a reverse setting (or a dedicated removal tool) to open the clips cleanly without damaging the netting or support infrastructure. This allows the expensive netting to be folded and stored safely for the winter.
Before re-installation the following year, inspect the stored zigzag wire clips for any signs of rust or deformation. Light surface rust can often be brushed off, but heavily corroded or bent clips should be discarded. This maintenance check, combined with careful installation, ensures the anti-bird net system remains reliable, safe for the trees, and effective at protecting the crop season after season.
